Manaaki – Protect & Care

To protect and preserve the natural world. We’re helping provide a safe place for kiwi chicks in their Napier crèche where they’re given the skills they will need to survive once released.

How you can opt out to help save the kiwi.
Place your Save the Kiwi door hanger on your door and choose to not have your room serviced and you will provide a meal for a kiwi – it’s that easy!

Save the Kiwi
As the national charitable trust, Save the Kiwi works alongside iwi, local kiwi conservation groups and the Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai to reverse the decline of the national kiwi population by creating more kiwi-safe habitat. Find out more about the mission to Save the Kiwi.

Our Local Residents

Auckland Zoo
Auckland Zoo is home to one of the country’s nocturnal houses, Te Wao Nui. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of one of the zoo’s resident kiwi behind the glass.

Tāwharanui
Tāwharanui Regional Park is New Zealand’s first integrated open sanctuary, bringing together conservation, sustainable farming and recreational activities in one spectacular coastal zone. One of the few onshore locations in Auckland where it’s common to see a kiwi up close.

Motutapu Island
Auckland’s Motutapu and Rangitoto islands are joined by a short bridge. When the chicks from the creche site reach 1.2kg they’re released onto Motutapu Island where they join population of kiwi there. Anyone can visit Motutapu and Rangitoto Islands to explore, and sometimes visitors might be lucky enough to see a kiwi.

Shakespear Open Sanctuary
Shakespear Open Sanctuary is an onshore sanctuary to many native species. A number of little spotted kiwi/kiwi pukupuku live here, where they have been translocated from offshore islands like Kapiti Island.
